A TrainingPeaks alternative for cyclists without a coach

TrainingPeaks is a training log and analysis platform. Many coaches use it to set sessions for their athletes, and many athletes use it to track fitness, fatigue and form. The plan itself comes from a coach or a plan you buy.

Torque is an iPhone app for amateur cyclists with about 6 hours a week. It writes the plan itself, sets it around the days and hours you have, and changes it when your week changes. The plan is included in the price.

How Torque plans your week

Torque plans your week around work and family, gives you a few sessions that work, and gets you faster on the hours you have.

    What are you training for?

An event, a winter base, a kind of rider you want to become, or just getting fitter. Torque builds the plan around it.

Every session for the coming weeks, set to the days and hours you have. Each circle is a session and its load.

What TrainingPeaks does well

  • Working with a coach. Coaches and athletes plan and talk to each other in one place. Coaching is sold through TrainingPeaks from $149 a month.
  • Analysis. The Performance Management Chart tracks fitness, fatigue and form (CTL, ATL and TSB).
  • A free account. The Basic account lets you log workouts, sync devices and follow a plan.
  • Indoor riding. TrainingPeaks Virtual is included with Premium.
  • Apps everywhere. It runs on the web, iOS and Android.

When to choose TrainingPeaks

  • You have a coach, or you want one.
  • You want to buy a plan written by a particular coach.
  • You want detailed analysis and like working with CTL, ATL and TSB yourself.
  • You train for more than cycling and want it all in one log.
  • You want to use it on Android or in a web browser.

When to choose Torque

  • You don't have a coach and want the plan made for you.
  • Your week changes, and you want the plan to change with it instead of moving sessions by hand.
  • You want to type something like "sick this week" and have Torque move your sessions.
  • You want fitness, fatigue and FTP from every ride, with a plain note on what each ride did.
  • You want the plan included: $79.99 a year, with nothing extra to buy.

Questions

Do I have to buy a training plan in Torque?

No. There is one plan and everything is included: $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year. Torque builds the plan from your goal and the days and hours you have.

Does Torque show fitness and fatigue like TrainingPeaks?

Yes. Torque shows your fitness, fatigue and FTP from every ride, and after each ride it tells you in plain words what the ride did.

Does Torque sync with Garmin?

Garmin rides reach Torque through Apple Health for now. Garmin has to approve apps like Torque before a direct connection, and its review is in progress. Hammerhead and Wahoo connect directly.

Do I need a race to use Torque?

No. You can train just to get fitter. If you add a race later, the plan builds toward it, and if you remove it, the plan carries on.
